A civil funeral

In the civil burial, the family decides about the burial way. There are several options of holding the funeral ceremony. There is an option of having a completely secular ceremony or a traditional Jewish ceremony. Also, choosing the way of burial, the purification, type of shrouds or even burial in a coffin.

Civil funerals usually take place in civil cemeteries and private cemeteries (such as in Kibbutzim or small towns). Currently, most of the Hevre Kadisha societies (the burial societies) allow flexibility at funerals and allow the family members to hold a secular ceremony with no religious characteristics.

A civil funeral can be held privately and you can receive the entire range of services which are supplied by Ma’agalim.

A religious funeral

A religious funeral takes place in cemeteries managed by the Hevre Kadisha or by the religious council. It is possible to hold a religious ceremony which will be conducted by a Rabbi on our behalf, who will conduct the service sensitively.

At a religious funeral a respectful ceremony can be performed, customized for the family and for the work and uniqueness of the deceased.

Stages of organizing a funeral

Setting day and time of funeral
The day and time of the funeral are set by the Hevre Kadisha, but they usually take into consideration the family’s wishes. At this point a number of considerations should be taken into account – such as the desire not to delay the burial (because of religious reasons), notifying all family members, the deceased’s honor etc.

Notification of relatives and ordering obituaries
Printing obituaries, hanging them up, advertising on the media and notifying friends and relatives, which is a strict and complex process, to make sure that no one is forgotten.

Preparing for the funeral
Taking into account the season – shading, cover from the rain, water, amplification, writing eulogies and more.

Preparing for the Shivah days
Chairs, tables, tent with heating / cooling, continuous refreshments and drinks throughout the Shivah week, food for the mourners, disposable dishes, hot water thermos, cleaning and tidying up throughout the Shivah week.

Providing an answer for all mourning customs
Meals, prayers, visiting hours, meals with no meat etc.

Issuing a death certificate
If the person died in hospital, the certificate will be issued by the hospital. If he died at home, a doctor will issue this certificate (after you receive approval from the police).

Issuing a burial license from the Ministry of Health
In order to receive the license one of the family members or someone on your behalf should report to one of the offices of the Ministry of Health, together with the relevant documents, which are specified in the Ministry of health web site. Without this certificate the burial cannot be performed.

Selecting the cemetery
A cemetery close to home, a civil cemetery, cemeteries in Kibbutzim or Moshavim – coordination with the cemetery where there is a vacant plot and positioning the grave.

Selecting the grave plot
In recent years a number of new forms of burial have emerged, due to a growing shortage of burial areas. When you arrive a t the cemetery you must select a plot for your loved one, and it is important to know that if it is possible you are entitled to purchase the adjacent plot.

Transfer of the deceased to the cemetery
From home or from hospital is usually free of charge. Payment will be determined according to time of transfer and the burial place in regards to the location of the deceased.
